Don't Litter.

Littering is not as big a problem as it was in past years, mostly because municipalities have levied fines for this kind of inconsiderate behavior. These fines have forced people to think before they litter or pay and have helped to raise consciousness about the problem.

Today, most people wouldn’t even think of casually throwing trash out a car window (although some do just that), but that being said, many still think it is okay to drop a little this or that, here or there.

For instance, some people think it is fine to leave a half consumed cup of cold coffee in a parking lot because they are finished with it, or a mostly empty can of soda outside a department store because they can’t take it inside and some of the worst offenders are smokers who drop their cigarette butts on the ground when they are finished smoking.

How long does it take for litter to decompose when exposed to the elements?

  • Paper: 2 to 5 months
  • Cigarette butts: 7+ years
  • Milk cartons: 5 years
  • Rubber: 40 to 80 years
  • Aluminum: 80 to 100 years
  • Hard plastics: 450 years
  • Glass: 1 million years
  • Styrofoam: NEVER

Plastic bags don't decompose -even when exposed to the elements- they photodegrade, which means they break down into smaller and smaller toxic bits, eventually contaminating our water & soil with dangerous chemicals. Learn more about the hazards of plastic bags here.

Engage your family and friends about the problem and commit to help educate others to how important it is not to litter. This is especially true of our children. It is our job to help them become conscious and teach the importance of living a “cleaner life”. Remember - children learn best by example.

Litter is not only ugly, it can spread germs and cause many environmental and health problems.
